This was done to cut down on the install size of the game, but Bungie plans to cycle areas in and out of the DCV, updating older destinations to fit the current state of the game. In addition to the expansion, some of the less played locations and activities from the first three years of Destiny 2 were cycled out of the game into what Bungie calls the Destiny Content Vault (DCV), which also includes all areas from the original Destiny. Bungie described this expansion as the beginning of a new era for the Destiny franchise.

Beyond Light is the first expansion of Destiny 2 to be released on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
Furthermore, Beyond Light adds other content across the game, including missions, player versus environment locations, player gear, weaponry, and a raid. The expansion sees the return of the Exo Stranger from the original Destiny 's campaign, as well as Variks from the original game's House of Wolves expansion, both of which guides the Guardian on Europa. The player's Guardian also obtains this new Darkness-based power as a subclass called Stasis, which features new ice-based abilities that can freeze enemies. Players travel to Jupiter's icy moon Europa to confront the Fallen Kell Eramis, who plans to use the power of the Darkness to save her people and take revenge on the Traveler back on Earth, as she and many Fallen believe that the Traveler had abandoned them before the Golden Age of humanity. It was released on 10 November 2020, as the fifth expansion of Destiny 2. That's a shame, Crucible is in a real sorry state lately, needing new maps and big balance changes that Bungie are dragging their heels on. No mention of new Crucible or Gambit maps, mind. and Devil's Lair, will be here when it kicks off. Two Strikes returning from the first game, Fallen S.A.B.E.R.

The widely-liked Umbral Engram loot system, which let us influence the contents and attritibutes of drops, will return too - and should stick around. It's a three-player mode (with matchmaking) where, Bungie say, "Guardians will engage in ritual combat against Caiatl's chosen warriors." So maybe some sort of arena battle doodad? Would hoping for a survival mode be too much? Though I suppose she deserves indirect thanks because Calus's exile on the Leviathan did lead to him encountering the Darkness and becoming enthusiastic about the end of existence, turning him into the planet-drinking monstrosity we know and adore. We're not dead chuffed about that prospect, so I guess we'll all be lining up and shouting "Yeah? Come on! So, Season 13's story is that Caiatl stops by Earth seeking an alliance, but not an alliance of equals.
